History: In October of 2003, bugfish opted not to join his friends in the annual November NaNoWriMo challenge, having no aspirations as a novelist. Instead he opted to challenge himself to write and record an entire album in that same time period. He was the lone participant that year. In October of 2004, muskox was conned into moved to join the challenge. Two people is all you need to start a movement, and so this community was created.
Just as the point of NaNoWriMo is to get anyone who has had any thoughts of writing a novel to force themselves into dropping their inhibitions by eliminating such factors as editing, sense, perfection, coherency, etc, the point of National Album Recording Month is to get musicians to drop their inhibitions (and yes, some musicians actually do have those), and crank out an album worth of material during the month long period from midnight on November 1 to 11:59 p.m. on November 30.
The rules are simple: Participants are not allowed to be their usual perfectionist, self-conscious selves. they are not allowed to use any songs they have already written or recorded, even if they consider the songs to be unfinished. Particpants can work on outlines for concept albums, ideas for song topics or production styles before the month begins, but they must start the actual writing and production from scratch on November 1. They must be prolific. (Album length is still somewhat up for grabs. The general consensus (in polls) is that it should be at least 30 minutes and not more than an hour, but hey- it's your album). All writing, recording, and mixing of the album must be complete by 11:59 pm on November 30. Most of all, it must be fun to do. (Hopefully it will also be fun to listen to.)
your masterpiece will probabaly not be recorded during NaAlReMo. In fact, you may wind up with something pretty scary. But that's okay. The point is to get writing, playing, and recording without any hang-ups. And who knows? When you're done, you just may have something you want to market.
Currently, National Album Recording Month is to take place yearly in November, though as more people join in, we may find a month that is better for everyone involved. If you are interested in joining in the challenge, this year or any year, please feel free to join and participate in this community!
